Why Captain Waypoint

Living across borders is hard enough. Finding clear answers shouldn't be

Wherever you call home and wherever life takes you next, Captain Waypoint brings order to the chaos of living across borders.

Independent, by design

We are not a government. We are not affiliated with one. We are here to help

Captain Waypoint is an independent guide for people living, moving, and working across borders. We are not a ministry, not an embassy, not a public body. We help you find verified information and trusted partners for the things your life abroad asks of you. And when your embassy or consulate is the right answer, we point you straight to them.

What we actually do
  • Resources
  • Partners
  • Verified information
  • Local guidance
The problem

You're often on your own out there

Whether you just moved or have been abroad for years, bureaucratic and digital red tape catches up with you. Most organizations work in silos and treat each other as competition, while quietly sharing the same goal: actually helping people abroad. You end up piecing the answer together yourself. That costs time, energy, and trust.

  • Government information is fragmented across dozens of portals, ministries, and languages.
  • Expat forums and group chats contradict each other. Replies are out of date as often as they are right.
  • Every situation is different. Taxes, passports, healthcare, benefits, voting. The list raises more questions than it answers.
The answer

Captain Waypoint brings order to the chaos

We make official information understandable, personal, and actionable. No jargon, no endless search, no guessing which forum post is current. Just the clearest next step for your situation, anywhere in the world.

  • The Captain translates complex cross-border rules into clear next steps, tuned to your country, situation, and timeline.
  • Answers are grounded in 700+ verified sources. Updated daily, so what you read today still holds tomorrow.
  • When a question goes beyond what AI should decide, we hand off to a verified partner for a clear, personal answer.
Real situations, real help

Life abroad is full of moments nobody prepared you for

The kind of moments where a forum post isn't good enough, and the embassy politely says “that's not our job.” Here are a few. There are hundreds more.

Healthcare, new country

Your daughter has a 39° fever in Buenos Aires. Now what?

The embassy won't send a pediatrician. Captain Waypoint points you to a verified clinic around the corner, explains how Argentina's public and private systems work, and lets you book with a doctor who has taken care of families like yours before.

Buying property abroad

You want to buy a plot in the Algarve. Where do you even start?

Which banks offer mortgages to non-residents? Do you need a Portuguese NIF first? Who checks the land registry is clean? The Captain walks you through the sequence, and our verified notaries, lawyers, and mortgage brokers take it from there. No more 3am Googling.

What your embassy can't do

Your consulate is brilliant at passports. Less so at landlords.

Embassies don't negotiate rent, open bank accounts, or challenge a tax bill. They can't recommend private businesses either. Captain Waypoint fills that gap with a network of verified professionals who can, properly, in your language.

Taxes across borders

You freelance from Berlin for clients in Amsterdam. Who taxes what?

Double-tax treaties, VAT thresholds, entity types. This is where most people give up and overpay. We explain the rules in plain language, then connect you with cross-border accountants who solve this exact problem every day.

Moving the family

Madrid for three years. Will the kids lose a year of school?

Which international schools accept mid-term? Which follow the Dutch or French curriculum? Who handles enrollment in August while you're still packing? We map the options and connect you with placement advisors who've done this walk a hundred times.

Know who you can trust

Someone online sold you 'international health insurance' that doesn't cover anything.

Before you pay anyone abroad, check if they're verified on Captain Waypoint. Our partners are screened by real humans, documented, and reviewed by the communities they serve. If someone isn't on the Network, we'll show you who is.

How we work, and how we don't

Captain Waypoint is free. It stays free

We'll always help you ourselves first, with clear, verified answers in your language. When a question goes beyond what we should decide for you, a tax filing, a contract, a mortgage, a medical concern, we hand you over to a partner who does that for a living.

  • Our partners are verified by real humans, not algorithms. Licenses, registrations, and track records are checked.
  • Yes, they may charge for their work. No, we don't take a cut, a kickback, or a finder's fee. Ever.
  • You see who they are, who they've helped, the languages they speak, and what they cost, before you reach out.
  • If a partner doesn't behave, they're off the Network. Trust is the whole product.
  • Captain Waypoint itself is free for every person abroad, forever. No paywall, no premium tier.
  • We speak your language. Today in six, with more on the way. Local professionals who speak it too.

Questions abroad

The questions that come up when borders do

Pick a topic and a country. See how the same question gets a different answer depending on where you are. The Captain handles the long tail.

These answers are for demonstration only. They illustrate how the Captain walks you through a topic in the app, and do not contain real advice. Check official sources before acting.
Healthcare · NetherlandsAnswered by the Captain

How do I stay insured when I move abroad?

Open the Captain, tap Healthcare → Register with a Dutch insurer. Pick a Zvw-approved insurer from the list (VGZ, Zilveren Kruis, CZ, and more), then follow the 4-step signup. Do it within 4 months of arrival to avoid a back-dated premium. If you only work abroad short term, tap Check Zvw exemption on the same screen to request an S1.
